Junior editor and proofreader

Hyphen is on the lookout for a junior editor and proofreader to join its small and busy in-house team. We are a Melbourne-based niche storytelling company; we research, write, edit, design, and produce books, films and installations for organisations celebrating milestones.
This role is being offered as a 6-month contract with a view to extending to permanent part-time. As the junior editor and proofreader, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills while working on manuscripts at all stages of the editorial process, including line and copy editing, structural edits and proofreading.
About you
You have a degree in a related field, such as English, journalism or communications, and some professional experience in an editorial role, ideally in books or other long-form publishing.
You may still be early in your career, but you have a natural feel for words and an intrinsic understanding of how they’re supposed to fit together. When you scan a document, your eye goes straight to what is wrong, unclear or not quite working. Your attention to detail is immaculate and you’re agile, flexible and unfazed by bumps in the road. You’re comfortable receiving feedback and excited to learn.
Main duties
· Small editing projects
· Taking in client feedback
· Writing captions
· Proofreading
· Writing and editing social media and blog posts
Key criteria (essential)
· A degree in a related field, such as English, journalism, communications or creative writing
· Some professional experience in editing, proofreading, publishing or a related editorial role
· An exceptional understanding of grammar, structure and narrative flow
· The ability to work collaboratively and independently, managing your time and workflow
· A willingness to learn and a thirst for honing your craft
· Experience with InDesign and Acrobat (preferred but not essential)
