Senior Drupal Developer

We’re seeking a Senior Drupal Developer to support a major website modernisation program, delivering secure, accessible and high-performing digital services for a large public sector environment.

This role will suit an experienced Drupal/PHP developer who can work confidently in a multi-disciplinary Agile team, collaborating with designers, content specialists, testers and technical leads to deliver modern digital components and integrations.

Contract duration: ASAP to 30 June 2027

Location: ACT preferred

Work arrangements: Hybrid, with Canberra-based attendance preferred

Security clearance: Must be able to obtain Negative Vetting Level 1

Key responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test and deploy custom Drupal 9/10+ modules, themes and integrations.
  • Build clean, reusable and maintainable Drupal/PHP code aligned with industry best practice.
  • Configure and extend Drupal core and contributed modules to meet functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Develop secure API integrations for third-party systems and data exchange.
  • Apply coding standards, Git workflows and peer-review practices.
  • Support automated testing, debugging and performance optimisation.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation for custom modules, integrations and system behaviour.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, stand-ups, reviews and retrospectives.
  • Translate business, UX and content requirements into technical solutions.
  • Work closely with product, design and content specialists to deliver user-centred outcomes.
  • Keep up to date with the Drupal and PHP ecosystem, security patches and best practice.
  • Recommend improvements to development workflows, tooling and modern development approaches, including AI-assisted tooling.

Essential skills and experience

  • Strong experience developing and supporting Drupal 9/10+ applications.
  • High proficiency in PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Twig.
  • Experience with Drupal theming, configuration management and module development.
  • A good understanding of relational databases, such as MySQL, and query optimisation.
  • Ability to debug, troubleshoot and optimise Drupal performance.
  • Experience using Git and collaborative development workflows.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience contributing effectively within Agile teams.

Desirable skills

  • API and authentication integrations, including REST, OAuth and SAML.
  • Automated testing frameworks such as PHPUnit, Jest or Cypress.
  • Web security best practice in PHP/Drupal environments.
  • CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment workflows.
  • Agile delivery tools such as DevOps.
  • Contributions to open-source or Drupal community projects.
