Senior Manager, Portfolio Risk

As our highly valued Senior Manager, Portfolio Risk based in Brisbane and Sydney, your role plays a pivotal role in strengthening the Bank’s project and program risk management capability. This includes leading the development, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of robust frameworks, practices, and governance mechanisms that support effective portfolio risk oversight.

Portfolio Risk Management Framework
- Develop, implement, and continuously enhance a comprehensive project and program risk management framework, covering both delivery execution risks and risks arising from delivered outcomes.
- Establish and maintain consistent standards, methodologies, and tools to support effective risk identification, assessment, mitigation, and reporting across the portfolio.
- Conduct periodic reviews and maturity assessments of the framework to ensure ongoing effectiveness, alignment with regulatory expectations, and adoption of industry best practice.
Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration
- Partner with stakeholders across the enterprise to embed risk management practices within project and program delivery processes.
- Provide subject matter expertise and advisory support to delivery teams to strengthen risk identification and mitigation strategies.
- Facilitate governance forums and working groups to discuss emerging portfolio risks, trends, and control effectiveness, driving continuous improvement.
- Build strong relationships across First Line, Second Line, and support functions to ensure a coordinated approach to managing delivery risk.
Assurance and Reporting
- Develop and deliver regular, high-quality reporting on portfolio risk posture for executive leadership, Board committees, and relevant governance forums.
- Provide insights and analysis on key risk themes, trends, and emerging issues to support informed decision-making.
- Oversee the identification, escalation, and resolution of material project and program risks and issues, ensuring appropriate governance and accountability.
- Ensure alignment of portfolio risk reporting with enterprise risk management frameworks and regulatory requirements.
Risk Assurance, Testing and Continuous Improvement
- Coordinate and oversee risk assurance activities, including targeted reviews and testing of controls within projects and programs.
- Assess the effectiveness of risk management practices across the portfolio and identify opportunities for uplift.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the maturity, consistency, and effectiveness of portfolio risk management.
- Monitor external trends, regulatory developments, and industry practices to inform ongoing enhancements.
Do things differently with us
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in project and program risk management, ideally within banking or financial services.
- Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and embedding risk management frameworks, policies, and standards.
- Strong understanding of project and program delivery lifecycles and associated risk profiles.
- Proven ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams, influencing stakeholders at all levels
- Experience in preparing and presenting risk reporting to senior management and executive forums.
- Experience in developing and delivering risk awareness training and capability uplift initiatives.
- Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate complex risk concepts into practical outcomes.
- Previous leadership experience or demonstrated capability to mentor and develop others will be highly regarded.
Your Qualifications
- Degree-qualified in a relevant discipline; postgraduate qualifications desirable
- Professional certifications in risk management, audit, or information security (e.g., FRM, CRISC, CISA) highly regarded
- Project/program management certifications (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP, MSP, MoP) preferred
- Strong understanding of regulatory expectations within banking (e.g., APRA CPS standards)
