About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced, high-calibre experienced lawyer (up to Special Counsel level) to lead and grow their Public Law presence in Canberra.

This is a unique leadership position designed for a senior practitioner who thrives on autonomy. This role will see you taking on the role as Team Leader and be the face of the Public Law practice area in the nation's capital.

You will also work closely with high profile Commonwealth government agencies whilst at the same time mentoring the local team.

Key Responsibilities

• Practice Leadership: Serve as the senior lead for the team, fostering a high-performance culture and mentoring junior staff.
• Client Management: Act as a key relationship manager and supervisor for high-volume portfolio matters, particularly across key institutional clients.
• High-End Litigation: Direct and manage complex judicial review and merits review proceedings.
• Strategic Growth: Play a part in business development, key panel responses, and targeting growth opportunities across Canberra-based agencies.

Skills & Experience

• Qualifications: Admitted to practice in Australia with a valid open practising certificate.
• Experience Level: Typically 8+ years PQE with a dominant background in Commonwealth public and administrative law.
• Litigation Background: Extensive experience in Commonwealth merits and judicial review proceedings, ideally appearing before federal courts or tribunals.
• Leadership Capabilities: Demonstrated experience mentoring junior lawyers and successfully managing complex files independently.
