SCATS – Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System is the world’s leading intelligent traffic management platform. Owned by Transport for NSW, SCATS is used in over 200 cities globally, enabling road transport authorities to manage the flow of traffic across some of the most complex transport networks in the world.

In this role, you'll:

Be reporting into the Senior Manager (User Experience). This is your opportunity to work with an existing team of seasoned UX and UI designers on a world class, global platform to deliver innovative, user-centred products and solutions. The Mid-weight UX/UI Designer (SCATS) will collaborate with Product Managers, Product Owners, Business Analysts, Software Engineers, an existing UX and UI team, and end-users. In this role you will understand user needs, gather user requirements and work in a team to create clear, validated solutions. You will be responsible for conducting user research, analysing user flows, defining user requirements and defining product workflows for a global traffic management platform.

You will work on products that enable government authorities to manage traffic more effectively. If you have ever wondered how traffic lights are coordinated, how connected vehicles communicate with intersections, or how emergency vehicles get priority green-light runs, this role is for you.

About You

  • Experience wise, you’re currently a midweight UX, UI, or Product Designer with 3+ years’ experience, or you’re ready to step up
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent experience in web or mobile application design, product design, UX or UI design
  • A firm understanding of user research methods and the ability to use research insights to inform design decisions
  • Experience in requirements gathering, mapping user flows, wireframing, UI design, and usability testing
  • Ability to deliver effective presentations to senior stakeholders
  • The desire to put yourself in the shoes of our end-users; this role is focused on improving the workflow of traffic engineers through creating better products and solutions to help them in their work. We have a team of traffic management SMEs for you to learn from and will equip you with the tools and knowledge required.

Preferred but not essential:

  • The ability to conduct user research and usability testing
  • Collaboration skills and the ability work with a diverse team including designers, product owners, product managers, developers and stakeholders
  • The ability to produce interactive prototypes and UI designs
  • Experience in working with Figma design systems

This is a fixed term flexible hybrid role until 30th of November 2027. Two days will be based from our offices on Pitt Street, Sydney CBD (Tuesdays and Wednesdays typically).
