The King’s Foundation is a charity founded by King Charles III as Prince of Wales and was first formed in 1990. Inspired by the vision and values of His Majesty, the Foundation builds and supports communities where people, places and the planet can coexist in harmony.

The Hillview Foundation Australia Limited trading as The King’s Foundation Australia launched in 2024. The charity has acquired the NSW property ‘Hillview’ which will be the first flagship regeneration project and will serve as base for developing the charity’s activities.

The King’s Foundation Australia will build upon 35 years of work undertaken by The King’s Foundation to build sustainable communities and transform lives, all inspired by His Majesty’s vision for harmony with the natural world.

The Role

The King’s Foundation Australia is seeking an experienced and dynamic Project Director to join its growing team at an exciting stage of the Foundation’s development. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer and working in close alignment with the Executive Director and other key staff, the Project Director will play a central leadership role in delivering the Foundation’s first flagship project.

The primary focus of the role is to lead the major heritage regeneration project of the NSW State heritage-listed property Hillview, located in Sutton Forest. The impact of this landmark project will have both State and National significance and provides a unique career opportunity to conserve, regenerate, and revitalise a site of significant heritage value for future generations. There is the possibility of a further contract based on the project’s status and requirements at the end of three years.

Working in close collaboration with consultants, external stakeholders, and community, the Project Director will be responsible for the end-to-end planning, management, and execution of the project. This includes coordinating detailed design development, planning approvals, timelines, procurement and tendering processes, consultant and contractor management, budgeting, reporting, and ensuring compliance with relevant heritage legislation and statutory requirements.

The Project Director will also be expected to build and maintain strong relationships with local council and government agencies, key partners, consultants, contractors, and community stakeholders, ensuring alignment with the Foundation’s vision and values.

This role requires a highly capable individual with a proven track record in delivering complex, multi-faceted projects, specifically within heritage and conservation environments. Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills, combined with the ability to navigate complexity will be critical to success in this role. An understanding of not-for-profits and their operating environment is advantageous.

Key Tasks

· Lead the end-to-end delivery of the Hillview regeneration project, from further developing existing planning through to execution and completion.

· Develop and implement project strategies, including scope, timelines, budgets, resource, and risk management plans.

· Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, policies, and standards including the NSW Heritage Act, planning frameworks and WHS requirements.

· Coordinate specialist consultants such as heritage architects, engineers, planners, quantity surveyor, and conservation trades and professionals.

· Coordinate planning approval submission process and manage stakeholder relationships with council and government agencies.

· Manage procurement processes, including the appointment and oversight of consultants, contractors, and specialist advisors.

· Monitor project performance of contractors against time, cost, quality, and risk objectives and implement corrective actions where required.

· Manage contractors and suppliers to ensure contractual obligations, quality, safety standards, and conservation requirements are met.

· Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including community groups, council, and government agencies.

· Provide regular reporting and strategic advice to the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director and prepare Board reports as required.

Person Specification

The essential requirements

· Tertiary qualifications in project management, architecture, heritage conservation, construction management, engineering, planning, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

· Demonstrated experience in a senior project leadership delivering significant and complex conservation, restoration, or heritage-related projects.

· Demonstrated experience engaging with and managing multidisciplinary consultant teams, contractors, trades, and builders.

· Proven ability to manage procurement processes, including tendering and the appointment and oversight of consultants, contractors, and specialists.

· Knowledge and working experience of heritage legislation, specifically the NSW Heritage Act., conservation principles and planning frameworks.

· Highly developed stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, including working with government and community groups.

· Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and executive or Board level briefings.

· Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a small, growing organisation with evolving priorities.

· Desirable to have some experience or understanding of the non-for-profit sector.
