Shift work with Purpose

Tram Driving is centred around shift work, working on your own, and requires a high level of concentration for long periods of time. To support your growth and development, we offer comprehensive paid training when you commence, additional development throughout your career, all backed up by continuous support from managers and colleagues.

What makes a good Tram Driver?

Safety is our top priority, and with a focus on safety first, quick reactions and the ability to respond to a wide variety of events, we need to ensure our drivers have a proven record of safe driving.

Our drivers pride themselves on passenger service, through announcements, updates and balancing passengers entering and exiting the tram across all the conditions Melbourne can throw at you. Being resilient is essential, and having the ability to handle pressure will ensure a smooth experience for yourself and your passengers.

What do you we look for from our applicants?

  • Full work rights within Australia (Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
  • Be able to undertake and pass a medical assessment that includes basic mobility, hearing, and other health checks.
  • Have a minimum of 12 months driving experience in Victoria or Australia, with no more than two traffic infringements in a 3 year period. Please note, some infringements will automatically disqualify you from the recruitment process
  • The ability to commit to our structured 6-10 week training program, for which you’ll receive a Certificate III in Light Rail Driving

Other important information

  • Our working week is 40 hours per week, 5 days a week inclusive of weekends and public holidays following a rotating roster
  • Rosters are available 20 weeks in advance but can change depending on network and staffing conditions
  • Some shifts start early in the morning and some deep into the evening in line with our network operations
  • We have a total of eight tram depots in the following four regions: à North depots: Essendon, Brunswick, Preston à East depots: Kew, Camberwell à South depots: Malvern, Glenhuntly à CBD depot: Southbank

Our Recruitment process after you apply

· Screening: Members of our Talent Acquisition team will do the initial screening of your application and determine whether you progress to the next stage

· Online testing: We’ll send you some online tests to complete which helps determine your suitability for the role

· Licence & demerit points checks: As previously mentioned, we look at the number and type of demerit points you’ve received over the past three years. You will be required to provide a VicRoads 5 year demerit point and driver history report if you proceed to this stage of the process

· Assessment centres: Run frequently throughout the year, we will invite you in to hear more about tram driving, undertake some in-person testing and interviews

· Background & medical checks: Right to work, ID, criminal history and reference checks, along with the required medical and drug & alcohol testing

· Final evaluations & commencement: Based on your availability and our next set of driver classes, discussing start dates and offers
