Principal Technical Specialist

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity within a Queensland Government environment for a senior network security specialist to take a technical lead role across enterprise-scale firewall and security infrastructure initiatives. You’ll work as part of a cyber security program delivering uplift and operational readiness across critical platforms, covering upgrades, migrations, optimisation, troubleshooting, and transition of new capability into BAU. This role suits someone who enjoys deep hands-on engineering work in complex, highly governed environments with strong stakeholder engagement across project, operations, and vendor teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead deployment, upgrade, configuration and optimisation of enterprise firewall platforms
• Deliver firewall uplift initiatives including replacement/migrations and operational transition
• Implement and support network segmentation, VPN/remote access, and high availability configurations
• Integrate firewall solutions with enterprise routing and switching (Cisco)
• Manage and optimise firewall rulebases using policy management / compliance tooling (e.g., AlgoSec or equivalent)
• Monitor firewall health/performance and proactively resolve issues (e.g., SolarWinds or equivalent)
• Provide advanced troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and third-level technical support
• Produce high-quality technical artefacts (solution designs, implementation plans, test evidence, change/rollback procedures, configuration documentation)
• Work closely with internal delivery teams, operational teams, and external vendors/suppliers to ensure outcomes are achieved

Skills and Experience (Must Have)

• Strong hands-on experience delivering enterprise firewall projects end-to-end (build/upgrade/replacement/troubleshooting/optimisation)
• Commercial experience with Check Point firewalls (implementation and operational support)
• Commercial experience with Palo Alto firewalls (implementation and operational support)
• Experience with F5 (LTM/GTM and/or WAF) in enterprise environments
• Strong Cisco routing & switching experience (especially firewall integration)
• Demonstrated experience with network segmentation and VPN/remote access
• Experience with firewall policy/rulebase management tooling (e.g., AlgoSec or equivalent NSPM tool)
• Monitoring and reporting experience using tools such as SolarWinds (or similar)
• Ability to work in structured environments with strong change and service management practices

Desirable Criteria (Nice to Have)

• Experience with ServiceNow and/or ITIL service management processes (incident/problem/change/config)
• Experience with secure web gateway / proxy / gateway technologies
• Prior experience in large, highly governed enterprise or government environments
• Current driver’s licence (where travel between sites is required)
