Senior Planning Engineer – Power Systems
NES Fircroft are partnering with a large WA organisation who are seeking a Senior Planning Engineer to support system planning activities across regional power networks in Western Australia. This is an urgent 12‑month contract with an attractive hourly rate and flexible working arrangements once established in the role.
Job Title: Senior Planning Engineer – Power Systems
Location: Perth (with occasional regional WA travel)
Rate: Up to $150 per hour
Length: 12 months with possible extension
Working arrangement: 3 days in office, up to 2 days working from home once settled
The Role
This position sits within a specialist energy planning team and focuses on system planning and power system studie s to support the ongoing development of generation, transmission and distribution networks.
You’ll work across steady‑state and dynamic power system studies, renewable energy connection assessments, and short‑ to medium‑term capacity planning, supporting new loads, generators and DER connections across regional networks.
The role suits an experienced power systems engineer with strong modelling capability and a practical, solutions‑focused approach, comfortable working with internal stakeholders and regional teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake power system studies including load flow, dispatch and dynamic modelling (RMS / EMT)
- Support connection assessments for new generators, loads and renewable energy projects
- Develop short‑ to medium‑term capacity and network development plans
- Provide technical support on DER integration and emerging power system technologies
- Maintain and apply planning standards, criteria and system models
- Contribute to high‑level option assessment and financial evaluations
- Build trusted relationships with regional teams and internal stakeholders
- Support capability development and knowledge sharing within the planning team
Key Experience
- Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering (or similar)
- Significant experience in power system or network planning
- Strong understanding of generation, transmission and distribution systems
- Load flow and dispatch modelling
- Dynamic power system studies (RMS and EMT)
- Exposure to renewable energy and energy storage technologies
- Proficiency with power system simulation tools (PowerFactory highly regarded)
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage non‑technical stakeholders
- Knowledge of utility planning standards and regulatory environments is advantageous
