The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture, also known as Foundation House, is a leader in delivering specialist trauma-focused services that work with the strengths and resilience of refugees, their families, and communities to rebuild lives shattered by torture and other traumatic events.

We support the work of the organisation through excellence in Executive Services, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology and Strategic Projects.

The Occupational Safety Advisor is the primary point of contact for occupational health and safety at Foundation House. The role sits within and works closely with the Human Resources team to provide specialist advice, coaching, and practical support to assist staff and managers to meet their occupational health and safety obligations and to promote a proactive and preventative safety culture across the organisation, including in relation to psychological health and psychosocial risk management.

The Role

The Occupational Safety Advisor (OSA) role supports managers to implement and maintain safe systems of work, undertake risk assessments, and effectively identify, manage, and respond to hazards and incidents. The OSA also undertakes the role of Return-to-Work Coordinator for Foundation House, providing proactive injury management and coordinating return to work and rehabilitation processes in accordance with legislative and organisational requirements.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Act as the Return‑to‑Work Coordinator for Foundation House, adopting a proactive and supportive approach to assist staff to remain at work or return safely and sustainably following injury or illness, in accordance with legislative requirements and organisational policies.
  • Manage WorkCover claims to ensure Foundation House meets its obligations under the Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act, and work in collaboration with Foundation House finance staff to monitor and report on WorkCover related expenditure.
  • Oversee the reporting, monitoring, and management of workplace health and safety incidents, ensuring incidents are investigated by managers, appropriate corrective actions are identified, and follow‑up actions are implemented and reviewed for effectiveness.
  • Support the organisation to meet its obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety (Managing Psychosocial Hazards) Regulations 2021 (Vic) by assisting managers to identify, assess, and control psychosocial hazards in the workplace.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and review of psychosocial risk assessments and control measures, ensuring they align with legislative requirements, WorkSafe guidance, and organisational policies.
  • Develop and deliver occupational health and safety training for staff and managers, including incident management, risk management, hazard identification, psychosocial risk awareness and safe work procedures.
  • Develop and implement occupational health and safety induction programs to ensure staff and managers understand their safety responsibilities and obligations.

The role is available as an ongoing, part-time (0.4 EFT) position and will be based in our Brunswick office.

What You’ll Need To Successfully Apply

To be successful, you will need to positively respond to the below selection criteria:

  • Prior experience providing practical occupational health and safety advice within a not for profit or comparable organisational environment, including supporting compliance with relevant Victorian OHS and workers compensation legislation.
  • Proven ability to support managers to identify, assess and manage workplace hazards, including physical and psychosocial risks, conduct risk assessments, investigate incidents, and implement corrective actions within established policies, procedures, and legislative frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience managing WorkCover claims and supporting return‑to‑work and injury management processes, including liaising with employees, managers, insurers, and relevant stakeholders to achieve safe and sustainable outcomes.
  • Background in developing and delivering OHS training and induction activities for staff and managers, including content related to psychosocial risk awareness, safe work practices and wellbeing in trauma exposed roles.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, practical advice, build cooperative working relationships, and engage effectively with staff and managers across teams and programs.
  • The ability to maintain accurate occupational health and safety records, analyse incident and safety data (including psychosocial risk indicators), prepare reports and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise professional judgement, manage competing priorities, and work under general direction while contributing positively to a team‑based, values‑driven organisation.
